Spring is right around the corner, which means that your focus will soon be shifting to caring for your lawn. To take care of your grass properly, though, you must first make sure that your lawn equipment in Franklin, NC is in good condition so that it runs optimally all season long. Here are a few important maintenance tips to remember for your lawn mower this spring:

  • Oil change: Changing your oil at the beginning of the mowing season is vital in order to prevent damage to the mower’s engine. Refresh the motor oil after the first five hours of use to begin the season, and then again after every 50 hours. It is also a good idea to check the amount of oil in your mower after every couple of uses. To do this, allow your mower to run for at least one full minute before checking the oil level with the dipstick.
  • Air filters: Lawn mower air filters need to be changed at least once a year, preferably before the start of the spring mowing season. Not only does a clean filter help to increase both the efficiency and performance of the mower’s engine, but it can extend the lifespan of the engine as well. When the filter is replaced, the make and model that is recommended by the manufacturer should be used.
  • Use fresh gasoline: In the same way that old oil can cause engine problems, so too can using gas that has sat dormant in the mower all winter. When you replenish your mower with fresh gasoline, check on the condition of the fuel filter as well, as it needs to be replaced after every 100 hours of use.
  • Other important maintenance: With the engine turned off, clear all debris from the undercarriage of the mower. Remove any clumps of old dirt and grass from the entire mower, paying close attention to the area around the engine. To ensure that the blades are sharp enough to get the job done, this would also be a good opportunity to sharpen them or, depending on their age and level of wear, replace them with new ones. The spark plugs should be changed at the start of the season and every 100 hours of use thereafter, as this will help to improve engine performance.
